Suspect sketch released in Escondido gym attack

ESCONDIDO - Authorities have released the sketch of a man who attempted to sexually assault an employee at an LA Fitness in Escondido late Tuesday night.

Escondido police report that the attack occurred after 10 p.m. as the employee was closing up at the gym located at 362 W. El Norte Parkway.

The victim told investigators that the suspect had apparently been hiding in a children’s play area when he jumped out and grabbed her. He punched her and knocked her to the ground and began to pull off her clothes. She fought back and broke free, and the suspect fled.

Escondido police officers and a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department chopper responded and searched the neighborhood but were unsuccessful in locating him.

The victim was taken to Palomar Medical Center with minor injuries.

The man was described as Hispanic, 35 to 45 years old, 5-foot-5, heavy with a shaved head and a teardrop tattoo under his left eye. He also had a tattoo of a cross on his left ring finger. The man was wearing a white tank top, black shorts, black high top tennis shoes and white knee high socks.
