LAKESIDE, Calif. -  A sheriff's deputy was shot at in Lakeside early Monday but not hit, authorities said.

The deputy was in the 12700 block of Laurel Street when he alerted sheriff's officials about 1:45 a.m. that he had been shot at, sheriff's Sgt. Dwain Washington said.

The deputy said he believed the shots had come from the vicinity of Beechtree Street and Pino Drive, Washington said. He was not hit.

Deputies responded, along with El Cajon police and California Highway Patrol officers, set up a perimeter and searched for the gunman, but no suspect immediately turned up, Washington said.
