Surveillance video captures mail thief raiding mailbox in El Cajon

EL CAJON, Calif. - Surveillance video obtained by 10News shows a mail thief in action in El Cajon.

On East Chase Avenue in El Cajon, a couple, hand-in-hand on a sidewalk, takes a walk Tuesday afternoon when suddenly a quick sideward glance from the man.

He apparently likes what he sees, making a hard right toward the house.

Surveillance cameras from several angles mounted on the home show the man making a beeline for the mailbox.

The homeowner, Dave, said it's still upsetting to see the actual theft.

Video shows the man reaching in, grabbing anything that wasn't junk mail and taking off with a handful of envelopes.

Dave has no idea what the thief took, but his main concern is identity theft.

"Financial or whatever, it is a personal piece of information that's taken, and that feels violating," said Dave.

Dave said another aggravation is what the man did right after the theft. As he's racing to catch up to the woman, he jumps in the air.

"It looked like a victory dance," said Dave.

The thief may not be dancing long, as postal investigators told 10News they have launched an investigation.

Mail theft is a felony, with a maximum of sentence of 5 years in prison.

Dave hopes someone will deliver a tip that could lead to an arrest.

"If happens to me, it could happen to the next person or someone on the next block," said Dave.

Postal investigators say they have no other recent reports of similar mail thefts in the area.
