Strong rip currents keeping lifeguards busy at San Diego beaches

SD lifeguards say they made 80 rescues Saturday

SAN DIEGO - Lifeguards at Mission Beach told 10News Sunday that strong rip currents are keeping them “extremely busy” this weekend.

They say a lot of people are in the water with the end of the school year here, and with warm water temperatures.

Lifeguards tell us the water temperature is already 67 degrees, a level we don’t usually reach until mid-summer. Plus, they also say the 2 to 3 foot surf is also bringing beach lovers out to the water.

Lifeguards say part of the challenge right now is that they are still not yet at summer staffing levels, so they are being kept very busy.

They tell 10News they made 80 rescues on Saturday, and made 200 over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend.
