Just before 4:30 p.m., an elephant seal pup beached itself at the Del Mar Shores, according to lifeguards.

A large crowd soon formed around the pup. For the safety of the seal and the public, lifeguards moved the 100-pound pup to its facility for the night before high tide.

Lifeguards described the pup as lethargic and say it may be dehydrated and malnourished.

They say elephant seals are rarely seen off the San Diego coast. They typically stay in cooler waters of central and northern California.

SeaWorld is expected to pick up the pup on Monday.
