SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families across San Diego County are gearing up for a Memorial Day weekend full of fun, but they might end up regretting how much they spend.

There are ways to avoid overspending on this holiday. One factor is deciding where to go, like the beach, which is always free. However, food and drinks can get expensive.

Planning ahead can help with that. For instance, a can of soda costs $1 out of a vending machine. If you can go to the grocery store, you can buy 20 for $7.50.

If you're taking your family on a road trip, make sure your tires are properly inflated before the long drive. It gets you better gas mileage, is safer and helps your tires last longer.

The Auto Club projects gas prices will rise about a penny a day through the holiday weekend, so it may be a good idea to fill up that SUV sooner than later.

If you think you need something for your outing, like a new hat or swimsuit, it's a good idea to double check if there is a good one hiding somewhere in your closet.

While there are Memorial Day sales, why spend the money if you don't have to?

Perhaps the best way to save money is to have everyone pitch in a dish for a potluck.

San Diegan Peter Gottlieb, who is already preparing his famous pumpkin bread for his friends on Memorial Day, told 10News, "I think that's what it's all about -- a sense of community and compassion towards somebody else and it's a day to simply reflect and be humble."
