Small brush fire breaks out in Torrey Pines

TORREY PINES - A small brush fire that broke out overnight Sunday in Torrey Pines created some challenges for firefighters.

The approximately 100-foot by 100-foot fire was reported at about midnight Monday on a hillside off North Torrey Pines Road. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials, it was spotted by passing Interstate 5 drivers, who could see flames burning brush and a few small trees.

Arriving crews had trouble accessing the fire because of the difficult terrain, so firefighters called in a helicopter, which made two water drops. Officials told 10News that if the helicopter had not been able to make the drops, the fire could have easily spread through the brush.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

This was the fifth brush fire to break since Saturday in San Diego County, including a nearby two-acre fire north of Carmel Valley on Sunday. A series of brush fires broke out in East County's Alpine area on Saturday.
