CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A 14-year-old Chula Vista boy who was struck by an SUV and died in the hospital a short time later was identified by a family member as Justin Dean Hertzberg.

The incident occurred at about 6:46 p.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of Nacion Avenue, police said.

"The skateboarder lost his balance and was thrown off the skateboard and fell into the path of the northbound vehicle that stuck," said Chula Vista police Sgt. Eric Tarr.

Police said the skateboarder – a 14-year-old boy – sustained serious injuries and was taken to UCSD Medical Center. He later died at the hospital at 7:26 p.m.

Resident Lourdes Delion told 10News, "I've been here a year and I've seen four accidents so far... very, very bad accidents."

"This street is not lit at all and people speed down this hill so fast," said witness Alexander Quijano. "There's a sign down there that says 'reduce your speed,' but people don't listen to that. There's no street lights out here at all."

At this point, police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Police also said the driver did not appear to be speeding.

Witnesses and residents told 10News that Hertzberg attended Hilltop High School.
