SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A unique program graduated its first class Monday. Six young men completed Urban Corp San Diego County’s EMT Youth Training Program.
An American Medical Response spokesman said San Diego is in need of emergency medical technicians and the program is a way to get quality trainees into entry-level EMT careers.
Urban Corps is a non-profit that helps young adults finish their high school educations and get started with a career path through paid on-the-job training.
“They’re going to go out there to find an exciting new career opportunity for themselves,” said Urban Corps CEO Robert Chavez.
The six young men in the EMT program were given scholarships for the program from groups such as AMR, Healthcare Academy of California, and UC San Diego Health.
The most surprising financial contribution came from prisoners at the RJ Donovan Correctional Facility. Inmates raised money for the program and even donated $5,000 for the next class.
