Water main break causes large sinkhole; prompts Sig Alert for N River Rd near SR-76 in Oceanside

Some residents without water for the day

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A 16-inch water main break caused a large sinkhole alongside a two-lane road in Oceanside early Wednesday, authorities said, prompting them to issue a Sig Alert.

The sinkhole on North River Road near state Route 76 was reported at around 7:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency closed North River Road between Stallion and Sleeping Indian drives until further notice.

According to the city of Oceanside, the water main, made of iron, was installed in 1986. The incident caused about 10 addresses to be without water service for the day, city officials said.

10News learned the hole was measured at about 15 feet deep.

Officials said several homes nearby will be without water service until 9 p.m.

The road is expected to reopen Thursday morning.
