SAN DIEGO - A motorcyclist died Wednesday after crashing with another rider on Interstate 15 at University Avenue.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at about 8:15 a.m. when two motorcycles collided on the highway.

Officers said one of the motorcycle riders was thrown from his bike was pinned under a big rig truck. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital, where he died.

According to the CHP, the motorcyclists were lane splitting on the highway before the crash. Officers said also that while lane splitting is not illegal, an investigation will determine whether the second rider will face any charges.

The wreck snarled traffic from the I-805 transition to I-15 for several hours.

The CHP said that more people are using motorcycles on the road. The agency said it has seen an increase -- a 20 percent jump between 2010 and 2011 -- in the number of fatal motorcycle crashes.
