Driver dies in crash on I-5 near Camp Pendleton

OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A 69-year-old motorist was killed Wednesday in a solo vehicle crash off Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton.

The driver lost control of his southbound 2014 Lexus IS 350 north of Harbor Drive about 2:40 p.m., apparently due to a blown tire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The sedan veered off the freeway and smashed head-on into a tree, CHP public affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

Emergency crews had to pry the man out of the wreckage. Medics airlifted the victim, whose name was not released, to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead, Bettencourt said.

The accident forced a several-hour closure of the southbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Harbor Drive.
