SAN DIEGO - A head-on collision on Euclid Avenue near Federal Boulevard in Oak Park prompted a Sig Alert that was in effect for several hours on Saturday. The alert was issued at about 11 a.m. and was lifted just before 1 p.m.
Police say a woman in her 70s behind the wheel of a blue Toyota Camry was initially involved in a non-injury collision at Marilou Road just north of the head-on crash.
Witnesses say the Camry ran a red light and struck another vehicle. Police say the Camry then somehow ended up traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Euclid Avenue. As the vehicle approached Federal Boulevard, the driver tried to avoid a northbound black Toyota Corolla but crashed into it head-on.
The Camry's driver was taken to the hospital with potentially internal injuries. Police say she is in a controlled coma.
The driver of the Corolla suffered minor injuries and his passenger, a 22-year-old woman, sustained a broken ankle and a fractured femur.
Police believe alcohol was not a factor in the crashes, which remain under investigation.
