Shoplifter shot, wounded after being thrown out of convenience store and charging Midtown resident

Man suffered gunshot wound to chest

SAN DIEGO - A gun-wielding Midtown resident shot and wounded an alleged shoplifter who charged at him after being thrown out of a nearby convenience store, police said Tuesday.

A man in his 30s was shoplifting and creating a disturbance in the Clover Leaf Market at 3070 Reynard Way shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, and the clerk forced him outside and locked the door, San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros said.

A man who lived close by heard the commotion and thought the clerk was being attacked, prompting him to grab his handgun and run outside to see what was happening, Delimitros said.

The alleged shoplifter began pounding on the store's door then charged at the neighbor, who opened fire, Delimitros said.

Delimitros said the man was shot in the chest, but his wound was not believed to be life-threatening.
