Police say man tried to take woman's purse, shot her in North Park alley

Incident happened in alley on Illinois Street

SAN DIEGO - A woman was shot in the shoulder by a man who tried to grab her purse, San Diego police said Thursday.

According to police, the shooting happened just after 1:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Illinois Street, near Polk Avenue in North Park.

The 62-year-old victim told police she parked her vehicle at her apartment in an alley on Illinois Street when a man and woman in a white, mid-size SUV drove up to her. The man got out of the vehicle and asked the victim for directions, but moments later, he demanded the woman's purse.

The victim ran away, and as she ran, the man shot her once in the shoulder, according to police.

The suspected shooter went back into the SUV with the female passenger and drove away.

The suspected shooter was described as Hispanic, in his 40s, clean-shaven with a heavy build. He has dark brown hair and was wearing a white T-shirt. The woman in the SUV was described as white and in her 40s.

The woman was conscious and breathing when she was found. She was taken to Mercy Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The SDPD Mid-City Division is investigating the shooting.
