POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - San Diego County Sheriff's deputies arrested an armed man who set his mother’s home on fire in Poway after a brief standoff.

Deputies responded to the home on the 13900 block of Powers Road just after 10 a.m. to reports of an incident involving the suspect's mother. When deputies arrived, however, the suspect had fled the area, SDSO said.

Deputies were called back to the home at about 3:30 p.m. when the suspect's mother told deputies he had returned home, possibly with a firearm. SDSO arrived and surrounded the home while the suspect's mom was able to get out safely, though a small dog was still inside the residence.

SDSO said the man refused to comply with deputies outside and that five to six gunshots were heard from inside the home. Shortly after hearing gunshots, deputies said smoke and flames could be seen inside the house.

Video from Sky10 showed deputies crouching behind patrol cars, with guns drawn and aimed at the home.

The man tried to exit the rear of the home just before 4:30 p.m. and was arrested by deputies without incident. No one was injured and the dog was returned safely to the man's mother. A search of the home turned up a replica air soft gun.

The man was brought to Poway Sheriff's Station where he tried to escape from deputies but failed, according to SDSO. His name was not released. Neighbors told 10News that a man in his 30's lives at the home with his mother and sister.
