SAN MARCOS, Calif. -

Sheriff's deputies said a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle early Sunday morning in San Marcos.

Investigators said the crash occurred at around 12:28 a.m. on the 1000 block of East Mission Road.

Officials at the San Marcos Sheriff's Station said a 47-year-old man was riding his bicycle in the bike lane just west of Avenia Chapala, when an unknown vehicle, also traveling westbound on East Mission Road, crossed into the bike lane and struck the rear end of the bicycle.

The bicyclist went over the handle bars and struck his face on the roadway and curb, causing major facial injuries.

Deputies said the vehicle failed to stop at the scene of the collision and fled westbound on East Mission Road.

The San Marcos Fire Department transported the bicyclist to Palomar Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries.

The collision is still under investigation by the San Marcos Traffic Unit.
