SAN DIEGO - A man with a piece of cloth covering his face sneaked into a Rancho Penasquitos home early Monday and made a failed attempt to sexually assault a woman inside, authorities reported.
The resident awoke to find the intruder in her house on Via Del Sud at about 1:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.
The woman showed 10News the couch where she was sleeping when she found a strange man standing over her.
"I woke up and then he asked me to do something," she said. "I tried to push him away and then he hit me again."
She says he asked her to perform a sexual act and when she fought him he became more persistent.
"So, the gun was like that," said the woman as she gestured. "Then he's like, 'Do it, do it.' I'm like, 'No, no.' I start screaming."
Her 13-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter were just down the hall while the struggle continued.
"Six, seven minutes, fighting with him, pushing and hitting," she said. "My hand hurts. I don't know why."
She said she was certain he was going to kill her just before he ran off. The struggle left behind plenty of DNA, which investigators are running through their database, searching for a hit.
"He ran away to the door and... that was over," she said.
She told 10News earlier that she heard a noise outside and thinks the man may have been watching her. There was no sign of forced entry, but she said her daughter's bedroom window was open.
The woman described the man as thin and roughly 5-foot-10 wearing dark-colored shorts, a striped shirt and a dark hooded sweatshirt. Police said his ethnicity was not known.
