ENCINITAS, Calif. - Recreational water activities were prohibited at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas Monday because of a weekend sewage spill.
About 6,200 gallons of sewage poured from a blocked manhole at Encinitas Boulevard and Vulcan Street from late Sunday morning until early Sunday afternoon, according to city officials, who said the sewage flowed into a storm drain that leads to the popular beach.
It took a city crew about an hour to remove the blockage and stop the flow.
Signs warning of the contamination were posted on the beach. They will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
