CARLSBAD - An SUV chase through the streets of Carlsbad overnight Tuesday ended with a rollover crash onto the Interstate 5 freeway and at least three injuries.
California Highway Patrol reports that the incident began at about 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, when troopers tried to conduct pull over a Chevrolet Tahoe with five occupants for a traffic violation at Carlsbad Village Drive, just east of Interstate 5.
The SUV sped away and a pursuit ensued. According to CHP, the vehicle lost control near Pio Pico Drive and Buena Vista Way. The SUV rolled through the yard of a business, broke a gas meter and then went onto the freeway, coming to rest on northbound I-5 just south.
The driver and two passengers were taken to a hospital with injuries. The driver’s injuries were believed to be serious.
Police also found a gun in the area during an ensuing K-9 search that may be linked to the vehicle. The driver is possibly facing weapons charges, officers at the scene said. No names were released.
The 1-5 northbound lanes were reopened by 2 a.m.
San Diego Gas & Electric crews were called to the scene to shut down the gas and repair the damaged meter, which was on the property of an insurance company. No evacuations were ordered due to the break.
