A 63-year-old Serra Mesa man hospitalized with West Nile virus is the first person in San Diego County to contract the mosquito-borne disease locally this year, it was announced Thursday.

There have been two other cases of West Nile virus in San Diego this year, but those people did not contract the disease locally, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency.

"It has been a fairly moderate season for WNV, but people should still be vigilant," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.

In 2008, 35 people tested positive for locally acquired West Nile virus in San Diego County.
