Serra High administration criticized after students wear ponchos to basketball game

SAN DIEGO - Serra High School and the school district are receiving some criticism after students were seen wearing sombreros and ponchos at a basketball game.

The students were urged by a peer to wear the costumes at a game against Mater Dei Catholic High School.

One SHS student wrote in a Facebook post, "please don fake mustaches, sombreros, and ponchos in honor of the Mexican culture in proximity to the high school. PARTICIPATE."

A Mater Dei parent called the move offensive.

"It was intentional to poke fun of the Mexican culture," said Dina Flores. "I think I was more offended by the failure of the Serra administration."

The actions of the students come nearly six months after three SHS employees were suspended for dressing in blackface at a non-school event.

A spokesperson for the San Diego Unified School District apologized for the behavior and said diversity training is planned for the Serra High School community.
