SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The inmate who killed a San Diego boy in 1987 was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Russell Taylor was 26 years old when he killed 15-year-old Dewan Emerson in Valencia Park, said prosecutors.

Emerson's mother said she last saw him at night when he answered the door to talk with a man he knew.

Dewan's body was found in a flood control channel the next morning.  He had been strangled and sexually assaulted.

Improvements in DNA testing allowed investigators to reopen the case last fall and name Taylor as the suspect.

He was already serving time in San Quentin State Prison for attempted murder when he was charged for Emerson's murder.
