SAN DIEGO - A teacher from Seattle began his attempt Tuesday to row from San Diego to Hawaii.

Rory Wilson plans to complete the 2,700-mile trek in about two months.

Wilson will make the trip in a special boat he made for himself complete with solar panels, a GPS device and satellite phones.

He said the trip isn't as dangerous as long as there's preparation involved.

"It's like 'whoa' what are you gonna eat? All the questions … because you're trying to figure out how to be totally self-sufficient for a long period of time in a boat this small, packaged this small," he said.

Wilson left at 5 a.m. Tuesday from the Driscoll Marina at Quivira Basin in Mission Bay.
