Prisoner who escaped after being taken to hospital re-arrested

Suspect eluded deputies in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, Calif. - A young man who escaped from custody after being arrested on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle was captured Thursday evening.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said 18-year-old Isaac Nachbar was arrested by members of the Fugitive Task Force just after 6 p.m. near Interstate 5 in Encinitas.

Sheriff's officials said a patrol deputy saw Nachbar pushing a motorcycle near the intersection of South Vulcan Avenue and Encinitas Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday. Believing the two-wheeler was one recently reported stolen in the area, the deputy took Nachbar into custody.

After arriving at the Encinitas Sheriff's Station, the suspect complained of feeling ill, and medics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas for an evaluation. Once there, Nachbar asked to use the restroom, and a deputy accompanied him as he did so.

Afterward, as the deputy was trying to put handcuffs back onto Nachbar, he broke free and ran out of the trauma center.

Sheriff's personnel and San Diego police searched the area by ground and aboard two law enforcement helicopters but were unable to locate the escapee, officials said.

Further details about the apprehension of Nachbar were not released.
