Missing Poway man found safe

POWAY - A 71-year-old Poway man missing since Monday afternoon was found early Tuesday morning.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department reports that Fernando Pacheco was spotted sometime before 8:30 a.m. by a concerned citizen at the border between Escondido and Valley Center. Deputies were unsure how he got there. Pacheco suffers from Alzheimer's, authorities said. The citizen recognized Pacheco from a photo he saw on the news.

Pacheco had last been seen walking south on Midland Road in Poway around 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to sheriff's department. Pacheco left his home in the 13600 block of Somerset Road with no credit cards, money or cell phone, authorities said, adding he speaks Spanish but very little English.

A search and rescue operation had been ongoing since Monday evening, with a command post on the north side of Midland Elementary. The search was temporarily halted at 3 a.m. An aerial search was set to resume at first light with a helicopter.
This is the second time Pacheco has gone missing. In January, he walked away from his home, and was later found a few blocks away.

Pacheco was in good condition, the sheriff’s department said. He was being driven back home by deputies to reunite with his family.
