An SUV owned by the San Diego Police Department burst into flames near City College early Sunday.

The fire occurred at about 1 a.m. near the southern end of state Route 163, near 10th Avenue.

According to broadcast reports, the SDPD recruitment vehicle was driven by a police sergeant who was returning to police headquarters from Qualcomm Stadium following the San Diego Chargers game when the SUV caught fire.

The sergeant pulled over north of Ash Street and was able to get out of the SUV before it burst into flames and became fully engulfed.

San Diego firefighters responded quickly, but were unable to save the SUV, which was destroyed.

Freeway lanes were closed for about 15 minutes while crews put out the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
