SAN DIEGO - A standoff in Encanto ended peacefully early Thursday after an apparently suicidal man punched his girlfriend, held her and two other women hostage inside an apartment. He eventually released the women, but refused to surrender to police for more than five hours.
The incident was reported shortly after midnight at an apartment located in the corner of Imperial Avenue and Flicker Street.
Police received a call around midnight reporting domestic violence in an apartment in the 6900 block of Imperial Avenue, according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali. Once there, officers found a 34-year-old man was armed with knives and holding three women inside, he said.
The man eventually let the women go and briefly stepped out of the apartment, threatening suicide and telling officers to shoot him, Cali said. He then ducked back inside.
Two of the women were unharmed but his girlfriend lost teeth when he punched her in the mouth, said Cali, who described the other two women as roommates. One of them was the man's mother, according to broadcast reports. Flicker Street between Imperial Avenue and Lisbon Street were closed off due to the standoff.
The standoff continued as dawn approached. At 6:10 a.m., officers were able to enter the apartment and take the suspect into custody.
