SD Councilman DeMaio Kicks Off Mayoral Run

Mayoral Candidates Include Carl DeMaio, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis

San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio formally announced on Sunday that he is running for mayor of San Diego.

DeMaio made the announcement in Rancho Bernardo at a vacant storefront in the 11900 block of Bernardo Plaza Drive.

The field to replace Mayor Jerry Sanders, who is being forced out by term limits, is expected to be crowded, with several state legislators believed to be considering a run.

The most recognizable candidates who have filed a "Statement of Intention to Run" are DeMaio and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. Others, including Rep. Bob Filner and state Sen. Christine Kehoe have expressed interest in the position.

State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher is expected to make a formal announcement to run for mayor on Monday.

Candidates are allowed by the city's campaign code to begin soliciting donations on Sunday, which is exactly one year away from the mayoral primary date.
