NAIROBI, Kenya - The father of a San Diego native who was among the dozens of people injured in a shooting rampage at a mall in Kenya spoke with 10News on Sunday about his daughter's injuries.
Steven Dang told 10News he believes his daughter Elaine Dang suffered injuries to her chest, arm and leg.
"The chest … something metal came in her chest and then the arm and the leg," he said.
He said that she either had or has to have surgery.
Dang works for the restaurant guide "Eat Out Kenya" and was meeting coworkers at Nairobi's upscale Westgate Mall when gunfire broke out Saturday. Terrorists with ties to al-Qaida unloaded a flood of gunfire and grenades into crowds of unsuspecting shoppers. Those who were not hit dodged bullets and crawled to safety.
Dang, 26, graduated from Torrey Pines High School. According to a LinkedIn profile in her name, she went on to UC Berkeley and then taught underperforming kids through Teach for America. Her father said she is now a manager at the restaurant guide.
She posted a photo of her recovery on Twitter on Sunday, tweeting, "Proof that I am OK - hanging out with some of my best friends in Nairobi."
She made it through the horror, but now faces the heartbreak. Her father says she lost two of her friends.
When asked what it was like for him when he heard news of the attack, he said, "I cried and then I'm afraid … Scary, but I’m happy right now … she do OK."
10News learned Dang's sister is flying to Nairobi Sunday night. Her father is asking for prayers for the other victims.
Kenyan authorities said Islamic extremists still held hostages inside the mall on Sunday. It is unclear how many hostages were inside.
Officials say 68 people were killed and more than 175 were injured, including Dang and four other Americans.
