The checkpoints are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. both nights, according to San Diego police.

"DUI checkpoints are an enforcement tool proven effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-related crashes, as well as being a valuable means of heightening awareness of the dangers of impaired driving," a police statement said.

Drivers caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol face jail time, license suspension and fees, fines and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
