SAN DIEGO - Police said a man who tried to steal from a Mountain View liquor store was beaten by neighborhood residents Friday night after he yelled a racial slur at a crowd.
The San Diego Police Department said the incident occurred at around 10 p.m. at Oceanview Liquor on Ocean View Boulevard near south 37th Street.
A clerk at the store told 10News that he was in a back room of the business when he saw a man on surveillance video taking beer and placing it in his satchel, so he confronted the man.
"I was looking at the guy and he was looking all weird and stuff, so I asked him, 'what do you got in that bag?' and he said 'nothing,'" the clerk said.
According to the clerk, the suspect then started pushing and punching him. As he fought back, the clerk said the fight spilled out in front of the store and several residents watched on until the man said a racial slur to the growing crowd of onlookers.
That's when the crowd chased the suspect for a block and then beat him, the clerk said.
When police arrived at the scene the man had a bloody face, so paramedics were called in and he was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
