San Diego police detective pleads not guilty to DUI charges

Det. Jeffrey Blackford accused in Dec. 7 crash

SAN DIEGO - A San Diego police gang detective accused of driving drunk and crashing his undercover police car while off duty late last year was arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor DUI charges with an allegation of reckless driving.

Jeffrey David Blackford, 34, has a readiness conference set for April 11. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Blackford, an 11-year member of the San Diego Police Department, was driving an undercover police car when he got into a solo crash in the 7300 block of Princess View Drive in Allied Gardens early on the morning of Dec. 7, SDPD public affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.

The wreck left him with injuries that required hospital care, she said.

According to the criminal complaint, Blackford was under the influence of alcohol when he drove his vehicle 30 or more miles per hour over the maximum posted speed limit on a freeway and 20 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit on another street or highway.

Blackford is serving desk duty pending resolution of the case.
