San Diego Mayor Bob Filner may be getting treatment at Sexual Recovery Institute in LA

LA TV station cites sources in Filner whereabouts

The top-secret whereabouts of San Diego Mayor Bob Filner's intensive therapy aimed at correcting his bad behavior with women is no longer a secret.

Multiple sources told 10News Filner is in Los Angeles and may be at the Sexual Recovery Institute. Los Angeles television station KNBC reported Filner is in SRI's care.

10News checked SRI's website and learned that a two-week session began August 5 -- the day Filner said he was checking into a program.

SRI's founder, Robert Weiss, told 10News, "It makes sense that he come to us," but added that he has not met with or seen Filner.

Weiss did not say whether another therapist at his facility might be working with San Diego's embattled mayor.

Filner has been accused by more than a dozen women of touching them inappropriately, making sexual comments and even giving them unwanted kisses. His former communications chief, Irene McCormack Jackson, has filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against her former boss.

Although Weiss would not speak specifically about Filner, he told 10News his sexual recovery program helps patients cope with the underlying emotions that lead to the behaviors that are causing problems in their lives.

"If someone comes to me and they have been publicly exposed … and are in denial … that's not someone that's going to make it in two weeks of treatment," said Weiss, who explained that a lengthier two-month program could make more sense.

"If this is someone who is in a position of power and they're used to having that power and they don't want to give up that power, that's going to be a big challenge for them because people I work with need to tune down their lives," Weiss added.

Filner has made it clear that's not part of his plan.

Although many leaders and citizens have called on him to resign, Filner said he has no plans to step down.
