San Diego fourth-graders look to solve the world's trash problems

Landfill trip could inspire LEGO robots

SAN DIEGO - Some local incoming fourth-grade students got a firsthand look at one of the Earth's biggest problems as the city of San Diego gave them a tour of the Miramar Landfill on Thursday.

The Eco-Derz (short for "Ecology" and "Coding") from Del Sur Elementary School are participating in the annual FIRST LEGO League Challenge. Thousands of students from 80 countries will research a project around the theme "Trash Trek" this year and build a robot out of Legos that will reinforce that theme.

City spokesman Jose Ysea said 900,000 tons of trash is created within the city every year. It's expected to fill the Miramar Landfill by 2025.

The Eco-Derz will try to find a solution through the challenge.

The yearlong project could result in a Lego trophy for the winning teams.
