San Diego fashion icon Leonard Simpson part of daring rescue to save driver trapped in SUV

Incident occurred on onramp to westbound I-8

SAN DIEGO - 10News has learned that a well-known San Diego fashion icon was part of a daring rescue to save a driver trapped in her SUV.

He risked his life to pull a woman to safety after she rolled her SUV on the Mission Gorge Road onramp to westbound Interstate 8 on Tuesday night.

"We saw the van flipped over and pulled over immediately," said Leonard Simpson.

Simpson is a fixture in San Diego's fashion world. In fact, he's known internationally for his work in business.

His bio notes some of his jewelry designs being carried at high-end retailers like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

10News cameras were there moments after he pulled a trapped woman from the flipped vehicle.

"We forced her door open,” said Simpson. “We helped get her out. She was screaming to get her out of the car. We lifted her out of the car, and asked her if she had any injuries."

He hurried the woman to safety while other vehicles drove into the wreckage.

"Then a motorcycle crashed, and the other guy flew off and on to the pavement without a helmet on," said Simpson. “Then behind him, two other cars crashed into them."

Simpson helped get everyone clear from the road and rush of cars. In the end, about five vehicles were involved.
