San Diego County unwraps new Registrar of Voters Office in Kearny Mesa

Building features art, memorabilia, artifacts

SAN DIEGO - San Diego County officials hailed the opening of the new Registrar of Voters Office Tuesday.

The 118,500-square-foot building is in the County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa, down the road from the old location at Ruffin Road and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The office at 5600 Overland Ave. will open to the public on Monday.

County officials hope the $73 million spent on the building gives them a modern, efficient headquarters for voter services and election night ballot counting. It includes a second-floor observation deck overlooking the ballot processing areas.

"This multipurpose facility also includes space for the sheriff, probation, auditor and mail services, plus 420 new parking spaces right next door," Supervisor Greg Cox said.

The building, the last one in the redevelopment of the county's Kearny Mesa facilities, also features public art, including a display of memorabilia and historical artifacts from the Registrar's office.
