San Diego County school official gets jail for corruption

Gregory Sandoval sentenced to 45 days jail, fined

SAN DIEGO - The first jail sentence has been handed down in a sweeping schools corruption probe in San Diego County.

U-T San Diego says Gregory Sandoval was sentenced Friday to 45 days in jail and 135 days of home detention, fined about $8,000 and given community service.

Sandoval is a former trustee in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Prosecutors say he accepted fancy meals and other gifts from contractors seeking business with the district. He pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy and failing to report gifts.

Sandoval is among 18 people charged with corruption involving contractors and officials in Sweetwater, the San Ysidro School District and Southwestern Community College.

Most have pleaded guilty but didn't get jail time.
