The family of the 27-year-old Navy SEAL, who is a native of Michigan, confirmed he was among seven American troops who died in a Black Hawk helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan

Kent County Commissioner Harold Voorhees tells The Associated Press that David "Davey" John Warsen's fiancee was notified of his death in San Diego, where they lived before his deployment. Voorhees says she was traveling to Michigan to make funeral arrangements.

According to MLive.com, Warsen would call his fiancée, Karlyn Deveau, after every mission to let her know he was safe. She never got the call Thursday.

Voorhees is Warsen's great-uncle. He says Warsen graduated from East Kentwood High School in Kentwood. He described him as an "upbeat" and "wonderful guy" who made sacrifices to become a Navy Seal.

MLive.com earlier reported about Warsen's death. The Defense Department on Friday morning hadn't confirmed the names of those who died. Four Afghans also were killed.
