Alfalfa sprouts pulled off store shelves because of Salmonella poisonings across 10 states may have sickened three people in San Diego County, local public health officials said Friday.

The sprouts, sold locally at Trader Joe's stores, have caused bacterial infections leading to 23 reported illnesses, including 11 in California, said Tammy Glenn of the county's Department of Environmental Health.

Six people nationwide had to be hospitalized, she said.

The most recent illness was reported May 2, Glenn said.

The recalled sprouts, which were sold under several brand names, are:

  • California Fresh Exotics, in a 5-ounce plastic clamshell container
  • Nature's Choice, in 4-ounce plastic cups
  • Caldwell Fresh Foods, in 4-ounce plastic cups, 1-pound plastic bags, 2-pound and 5-pound plastic bags in cardboard boxes

Officials believe the sprouts have been removed from shelves of Trader Joe's stores, but urged anyone who has the brands at home to toss them out or return them to the retailer.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and vomiting and is especially dangerous for the young, elderly and anyone with immune deficiencies.
