Road work on Torrey Pines Road snarls traffic

More traffic expected Thursday

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Construction on Torrey Pines Road snarled traffic in La Jolla Wednesday morning.

Traffic was reduced to one lane on Torrey Pines Road because road construction crews put fresh blacktop over the repairs they've been making for months on the roadway through the heart of the community.

Officials said cars heading westbound from Interstate 5 and exiting on La Jolla Parkway would be impacted by the roadwork.

"It's ridiculous," said Kara Carlson, who works in La Jolla.

Carlson told 10News it took her an hour and a half to get from the Interstate 5 to the restaurant she works at in La Jolla Cove.

"Can't they do it at nighttime?" Carlson asked. "There should be a better time than in the middle of the day."

Bill Goehring spent eight hours driving from the Bay Area to visit friends in La Jolla, but when he got off the freeway, it took more than an hour to drive down the hill into La Jolla.

10News spotted several frustrated drivers making dangerous U-turns to escape the gridlock, which lasted until about 3 p.m. when workers called it quits for the day.

The logjam is expected to begin again Thursday at 8 a.m., according to a city representative.

The rep told 10News workers will have to close down one lane in each direction to complete the slurry seal now in progress.

The good news for residents is the project is nearing completion.
