Residents left without power after car hits transformer box

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of residents were left without power early Tuesday morning after a car crashed into a utility box in Grantville.

According to police, the incident happened at around 2 a.m. in the 6200 block of Rancho Mission Road.

10News learned a Ford Mustang crashed into two parked cars and a San Diego Gas & Electric transformer box, causing power loss for several nearby apartment buildings.

A witness said she heard a loud crash from outside, and when she rushed out to see the damage, the driver of the Mustang was nowhere to be found.

According to SDG&E, the power outage affected residents in Mission Valley, Kearny Mesa and Tierrasanta. Updates on the power outage can be found on SDG&E's outage map: www.sdge.com/safety/outages/outage-map.

Crews were hoping to restore power by 7 a.m. before the temperatures rise, however the utility says they expect to have power up for the affected area by 12:30 p.m.
