The fire at the three-story 330-unit Casa Escondida building at 715 North Broadway was reported just before 3:30 a.m., according to Escondido police Sgt. Ryan Fien.

The fire erupted in a third-story unit, and residents on the first two floors were evacuated, while third-floor residents were forced to shelter in-place until the fire was out, he said.

The Red Cross was asked to help those who may need alternate accommodation. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
