SAN DIEGO - A police officer fatally shot a wanted parolee Thursday when the suspect appeared to be reaching for a concealed weapon following a foot chase in the College area, authorities reported.

A San Diego police officer opened fire just before 1 p.m. while trying to serve a search warrant near the Villa Del Sol Apartments in the 5400 block of Reservoir Drive, just east of San Diego State University, according to SDPD public affairs Lt. Andra Brown.

10News learned multiple law enforcement agencies were at the location serving a warrant when the shooting occurred. According to authorities, when officers arrived at the scene, one man fled and another refused to follow instructions.

"The officer believed that this suspect had a weapon on him and he turned towards the officer after the officer gave him commands to show his hands," said SDPD homicide Lt. Jorge Duran.

The identity of the deceased man has not been released. Details of the warrant were not disclosed.

Following the gunfire, officers evacuated people from the apartment building where it occurred and searched the complex and surrounding neighborhood for a second suspect.

Resident Dorian McWain told 10News, "And I heard these gunshots fired rapidly, at least 5 in a row … it definitely sounded like a crisis situation."

A SWAT team was summoned to the scene, and nearby Alvarado Hospital (6655 Alvarado Road) was locked down for at least two hours during the ordeal, according to police dispatchers.

Just before 3 p.m., authorities were able to apprehend the second suspect at an apartment complex on Montezuma Road. His name was not immediately released.

At about 7 p.m., authorities said there were no other suspects or victims involved in the investigation.

SDSU, which began classes Thursday, was not locked down during the investigation.
