The man fled when a patrolman tried to pull him over for running a stoplight at India and Hawthorn streets about 10 a.m., said Marguerite Elicone, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Harbor Police.

The officer tailed the fleeing man for a few blocks, but backed off when the suspect turned onto Kettner Boulevard, a one-way street, heading to the north against oncoming traffic.

Moments later, the stolen vehicle crashed into a pickup truck, and the suspect got out and ran off, Elicone said. He then tried to run into a nearby business, but instead crashed into a closed glass door, shattering it.

Officers searching the area found the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Aberrami Hatch, hiding behind a large garbage bin outside the commercial building he had tried to enter.

Before being booked into county jail on suspicion of auto theft and evading arrest, Hatch received hospital treatment for facial cuts he suffered when he ran into the pane of glass. No other injuries were reported.

The vehicle Hatch was driving had been reported stolen earlier this week, Elicone said.
