SAN DIEGO - A local San Diego tech company is helping to give previously incarcerated women a second chance.
Together We Bake serves recently released women, giving them the personal skills and workforce development they need to make it in the baking business.
“There is so much potential in each and every one of these women and they deserve to be given the skill sets they need to be successful,” said Stephanie Wright, co-founder of Together We Bake. “Instant Checkmate’s support is going to make major changes in these women’s lives.”
The Control Group is based in Pacific Beach. Kris Kibak and Joey Rocco are co-founders of the service Instant Checkmate, which compiles reports from millions of public records to help protect users from online predators and helps online daters research potential dates before meeting them in-person. After wild success they told 10News it’s time to give back, with a $10,000 donation to Together We Bake.
“That donation will enable three women to go through the program start to finish,” said Kibak. “These women have come from the toughest areas and have been through tough times. And we’re able to track their progress, hear their stories and see them succeed.”
Many of the women need a second chance. According to the Correctional Association of New York, the majority of women in prison have been victims of crime themselves -- 82 percent of female inmates suffered physical or sexual abuse as children.
Terry Garrett is the daughter of two addicts. She says her parents were often passed out when she arrived home after school. Garrett had her first sips of alcohol cleaning up after parties when many kids have their first tooth fairy visit.
Garrett also became an addict and spent 17 years in and out of prison for drug and theft offenses.
“Together We Bake has shown me that I can do anything I want, if I believe in myself,” said Garrett. “The team believed in me when I didn’t, and I can now go out into the working world with confidence.”
Through the program, she has been clean for eight years and is now a graduate of Together We Bake’s inaugural class.
