Power outage reported in City Heights, Chollas Creek, Oak Park

Mylar balloon struck power lines, officials say

SAN DIEGO - A Mylar balloon struck power lines in City Heights Wednesday, sparking an outage that left about 4,800 surrounding homes and businesses without power for a time.

The blackout hit in stages over a roughly half-hour period beginning shortly after 10:30 a.m., affecting neighborhoods in the immediate area as well as in Chollas Creek and Oak Park, according to San Diego Gas & Electric.

Crews had power restored to all but about 265 addresses in the late afternoon, SDG&E reported. The remaining customers were expected to be back on line by early evening.

The metallic-coated balloon hit overhead lines at Polk and Van Dyke avenues, causing one of them to overheat to the point that it ruptured and fell to the ground, SDG&E spokeswoman Allison Zaragoza said.
