Many longtime San Diegans remember when the minor league Padres played their home games at Lane Field, but now the name Lane Field could represent part of the makeover of San Diego's waterfront.

"This is a brand new design," said Jerry Trammer, the project manager for Lankford and Associates, which will present its updated project plans to Port District commissioners.

Located between Pacific Highway and Harbor Drive, the project has been scaled back from an 800-room hotel to two smaller hotels, but more importantly, the re-design includes nearly two acres of park and public open space.

"Included in that design will be in-ground lighting of where the basepaths used to be, as well as featured elements of the pitcher's mound and home plate," Trammer said of the plan.

The Lane Field project is considered to be one of two main links to the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan.

Construction on phase one of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan is already under way. The plan moves Harbor Drive to the east to make way for a public promenade.
