Young moving on to Red Cross

SAN DIEGO - City Council President Tony Young said Friday he will vote for Councilman Todd Gloria to succeed him next week, all but assuring that Gloria will win the post.

Young's endorsement of Gloria, first reported by radio station KPBS, will provide the necessary fifth vote for the District 3 councilman to win the job. His spokeswoman, Jill Esterbrooks, subsequently confirmed her boss' intention to throw his support behind Gloria.

Young, who resigned his council seat effective at the end of the year, had been silent on the subject earlier this week in deference to Councilman Kevin Faulconer, another potential candidate for the job.

Faulconer is president pro-tem, the number two position on the council, and the two have a close working relationship.

Young is leaving to become the CEO of the American Red Cross San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter. A special election to fill his seat will be held within the first three months of next year.

The council president sets the panel's agenda and runs the meetings, giving him or her considerable power. The genial Young, who had the job for two years, has been credited with working productively with a diverse group of politicians who span the political spectrum.

Gloria was chairman of the council's Budget Committee the past couple of years, helping to balance the books after years of work to recover from the city's self-inflicted fiscal crisis and the recession. He was recently labeled a young star by U-T San Diego.

"I am extremely grateful to have the support of Tony Young to be his successor as the president of the San Diego City Council," Gloria said. "It would be an honor to pursue his bipartisan agenda which has delivered demonstrable results."

Gloria represents Hillcrest, North Park and part of City Heights. Beginning next week, he will add downtown to his purview because of redistricting.

The vote for City Council president is scheduled for Monday during a 3 p.m. meeting at the City Administration Building.
