SAN DIEGO - San Diego police are trying to figure out what happened to a young female who was found unconscious in a canyon in Lincoln Park.

The female, identified as a minor, was found near Escuela and Castana streets at about 9 p.m. Monday.

A young man directed police to where the girl was, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

"At this time, we don't know if there was an actual crime or what," San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison said Monday evening.

On Tuesday, police said the girl told investigators she met up with a group of friends in the canyon Monday afternoon and they started drinking.

According to investigators, the girl apparently passed out and doesn't know what happened to her.

While police do not know if the girl was sexually assaulted, the department's Sex Crimes Unit is handling the investigation.

10News learned police will continue to interview potential witnesses who may have been with the girl Monday afternoon. The girl would also undergo a follow-up medical exam, police said.
